Happy Monday and first day of spring, beauties! If you’ve been taking your time to spring clean, NOW is the best time to remember the products in your bathroom! Not only is this new season a great excuse to declutter, but it is also the perfect opportunity to purge items that could being doing more harm for your skin than good. So, if your vanity looks like the Mount Everest of skin care products and beauty supplies (you’re not alone!), read on for 7 things to throw away right now.
I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again: check the expiration on your makeup! Eye makeup and foundations especially need to be tossed to prevent any eye infections or breakouts. Yuck. Don’t let your fave shades get to the point of harboring bacteria… If your makeup texture is different or it smells (ew), throw it out! (And tossing old makeup brushes and sponges doesn’t hurt, either!)
OK, so this is one thing I’m guilty of – keeping a hairbrush for waaaay too long. Oops! If your brush or comb is missing bristles and teeth, purge it immediately. The missing pieces could be damaging your hair! Opt for a brush with boar bristles that won’t catch your strands. Keep it in tip-top shape by removing hair after each use and deep-cleaning it on the reg (think weekly, with gentle shampoo and a baby toothbrush).
That super-cute loofah hanging in your shower is yet another item that harbors bacteria! This bacteria buildup can lead to infection and skin damage. Reach for an exfoliating body polish instead or an exfoliating cloth that you can toss in the washer after each use. Clean skin = happy skin!
UNFINISHED MOISTURIZERS AND CREAMS
I get it – it is SO easy to forget about a product when you take in so many! Maybe it was on sale or your BFF recommended it…but you never used it. Your moisturizers and creams – especially the ones that are in jars – are, again, prone to bacteria growth. Active ingredients in these creams can expire if exposed to heat or moisture over a prolonged period of time. Toss ’em, and start fresh!
We’ve all nicked ourselves while shaving, right? Now think, that razor you used has been sitting in your shower or tub for…how many uses? Any bacteria that has gathered in your razor can instantly be introduced to your skin through that small nick. Ouch, and ick! Avoid infection by switching out your blades every 5-10 uses or when you notice they are becoming dull! Your skin will be smoother and healthier!
NAIL POLISH & TOOLS
Those seasonal nail shades you were saving for the next year don’t last forever, unfortunately. Nail polish has an expiration between 1-2 years (!!!) because air can get into the container and actually change its chemical buildup. I, for one, thought my fave pink shade would last a lifetime! Always be sure to keep the cap on tight and store your polish in a cool, dry environment. Oh, and make sure you’re replacing your nail clippers, files, and scissors regularly, too. Your next at-home mani/pedi will be perfect.
SPF can do no wrong – unless it’s been sitting in your beach bag since two summers ago, that is. If you notice any type of change in your sunblock, like in color or consistency, throw it away! These changes from high heat or expiration won’t leave your skin as protected from UV rays. Grab a new bottle of SPF, and you’re good-to-go!
So, there you have it – the top things to throw away right now! I know what I’m doing with my Monday night without The Bachelor! What other items would you add to this list? Let me know in the comments, and check out my favorite items for spring below!
